Import Duty Calculator
This import duty calculator works out the customs duty, IGST and total landed cost when importing goods into India — the real, all-in price after customs clearance, not just the item's sticker price. Enter the customs value and the applicable duty rate to see exactly what you'll owe, including how IGST stacks on top of duty rather than being calculated on the goods value alone.
The full cost of the goods plus shipping and insurance (CIF value) — not just the item price.
Your product's Basic Customs Duty (BCD) rate — check the CBIC customs tariff for the exact rate by HS code.
Total duty + IGST
Log in to save₹14,900
What you'll actually pay on top of the goods themselves to clear customs — e.g. ₹14,900 on ₹50,000 of goods at a 10% duty rate.
Duty rate applied to the customs value — this is the Basic Customs Duty (BCD) charged based on your product's HS classification.
India's standard 18% IGST slab, charged on the goods value plus duty — not on the goods value alone.
Goods value plus duty plus IGST — the real, all-in cost of getting the goods to you.
How to use this import duty calculator
- 1Customs value: the goods' cost plus shipping and insurance (CIF value) — not the item price alone. This full figure is what duty and IGST are calculated on.
- 2Duty rate: look up your product's Basic Customs Duty (BCD) rate on the CBIC customs tariff by HS code — rates vary hugely by product, from 0% on many raw materials to well over 20% on some finished goods.
- 3IGST is applied on top of the customs value plus duty, not on the goods value alone — this calculator uses the standard 18% GST slab; check your product's actual GST rate (5%, 12%, 18% or 28%) if it falls outside the standard slab.
- 4Compare the total landed cost here against the price of buying the same goods domestically before importing — duty and IGST together often add 20–40% to the goods value, sometimes more.
Understanding your results
Total duty + IGST is the headline number — everything you pay beyond the goods themselves. Import duty (BCD) is calculated as a straight percentage of the customs value. IGST is charged at India's standard 18% slab in this calculator — crucially, on the goods value plus duty combined, not on the goods value alone, so a lower duty rate also lowers the IGST bill. Total landed cost is the complete picture: what the goods actually cost you once everything is paid, the number to compare against buying locally. Note this is a simplified estimate — it doesn't include the Social Welfare Surcharge (typically 10% of BCD) or any product-specific anti-dumping or safeguard duties, so treat it as a close estimate rather than your exact customs bill.
The formula
IGST = 18% × (Customs Value + Duty) · Duty = Customs Value × Duty RateDuty is a simple percentage of the customs value (goods cost plus shipping and insurance). IGST is then calculated on the customs value plus that duty — not on the customs value alone — which is why a lower duty rate saves you twice: once on the duty itself, and again because there's less IGST to pay on top of it. This compounding effect is why even a modest duty reduction (say, under an exemption notification) can lower your total landed cost by more than the headline duty saving alone suggests.
A worked example
₹50,000 of goods with a 10% duty rate: duty is ₹5,000, IGST is 18% of ₹55,000 (₹50,000 + ₹5,000) = ₹9,900, for total charges of ₹14,900 and a total landed cost of ₹64,900. Now the same ₹50,000 of goods, but qualifying for 0% duty under an exemption: duty is ₹0, IGST is 18% of just ₹50,000 = ₹9,000, total charges ₹9,000, landed cost ₹59,000 — a saving of ₹5,900, not just the ₹5,000 of duty itself, because the IGST base shrank too. On a smaller order of ₹15,000 goods at 5% duty, charges come to ₹3,585 (₹750 duty + ₹2,835 IGST) for a landed cost of ₹18,585.
Things to know
India charges Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on imported goods based on their HS classification, plus IGST calculated on the customs value plus duty — the two-step calculation this calculator models. Most goods fall under the standard 18% GST slab, though some categories attract 5%, 12% or 28% instead, so always confirm your product's exact rate. On top of BCD and IGST, imports can also attract a Social Welfare Surcharge (commonly 10% of the BCD) and, for specific product categories, anti-dumping or safeguard duties — neither is modelled here, so treat this calculator's output as a close estimate rather than your final customs bill. For an exact figure, check the CBIC customs tariff for your product's HS code or use the official ICEGATE duty calculator before importing.
Frequently asked questions
What is customs value (CIF) and why does it matter?+
CIF stands for Cost, Insurance and Freight — the goods' price plus what it cost to ship and insure them to India. Duty and IGST are both calculated on this full figure, not just the item's price, so shipping costs directly increase what you owe.
Do I have to pay both duty and IGST?+
Yes, in almost all commercial imports — Basic Customs Duty and IGST are separate charges that both apply. A small number of goods are exempted for specific reasons (certain medical or research goods, low-value personal gifts under a defined threshold), but standard commercial imports attract both.
How do I find my product's duty rate?+
Check the CBIC customs tariff schedule by HS (Harmonized System) code, or use the government's ICEGATE portal to look up the exact Basic Customs Duty and applicable GST rate for your product. Rates vary enormously by category, from 0% on many raw materials to well over 20% on some finished goods.
Does IGST apply at a flat 18% on every import?+
No — 18% is the standard GST slab and what this calculator assumes by default, but some product categories attract 5%, 12% or 28% instead. Confirm your product's actual GST rate before relying on this estimate for an exact figure.
What other charges might apply besides duty and IGST that this calculator doesn't include?+
The Social Welfare Surcharge (typically 10% of the Basic Customs Duty) and, for specific product categories, anti-dumping or safeguard duties aren't modelled here. For high-value or specialised imports, get a precise landed-cost quote from a customs broker before committing.
