Professional Tax Calculator (India)
This professional tax calculator estimates the monthly and annual professional tax deducted from your salary — a state-level tax under Article 276 of the Constitution, separate from income tax, that most salaried employees see as a line item on their payslip. Since professional tax rates and slabs are set independently by each state, this calculator covers the six most commonly searched states — Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana — so you can see your actual deduction rather than a generic estimate.
Professional tax is a state-level tax — each state sets its own slabs and rates.
Your gross monthly salary, before deductions — used to find the applicable slab under your selected state's rules.
How to use this professional tax calculator
- 1State: choose the state where you're employed — professional tax slabs and rates are set independently by each state.
- 2Monthly gross salary: your gross monthly salary, before deductions — used to find the applicable slab under your selected state's rules.
Understanding your results
Annual professional tax is the total professional tax deducted from your salary over the financial year, capped at ₹2,500 under Article 276 of the Constitution — the constitutional ceiling every state must respect. Monthly deduction is the amount that comes off your monthly payslip under your state's specific slab.
The formula
Annual professional tax = MIN(Monthly slab rate × 12, ₹2,500)Each state defines its own salary slabs and a corresponding monthly professional tax rate — this calculator looks up your monthly gross salary against your selected state's slabs to find the applicable monthly rate, then multiplies by 12 to get the annual figure. Since Article 276 of the Constitution caps total annual professional tax at ₹2,500 across every state, the calculator applies that cap as a final step, though none of the modeled monthly rates in this calculator actually exceed the cap when multiplied by 12.
A worked example
At a ₹30,000 monthly salary in Karnataka, the salary falls in the 'above ₹25,000' slab, so the monthly professional tax is ₹200 — giving an annual figure of MIN(₹200 × 12, ₹2,500) = MIN(₹2,400, ₹2,500) = ₹2,400. The same ₹30,000 monthly salary in Maharashtra falls in the 'above ₹10,000' slab, also giving ₹200/month and the same ₹2,400 annual figure in this calculator's simplified model — though Maharashtra's real rule adds a one-time ₹100 bump in February, bringing the true annual total to exactly ₹2,500; see the market notes below.
Things to know
This calculator covers six of India's most populous states — Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana — as a simplified model; every other state (and union territory) that levies professional tax sets its own separate slabs not covered here. Maharashtra's real rule also gives a full exemption to women earning up to ₹25,000/month, which this calculator doesn't model since it doesn't ask for gender — and its top slab technically adds a one-time ₹100 in February (₹200 × 11 + ₹300 in Feb = ₹2,500), which this calculator simplifies to a flat ₹200 × 12 = ₹2,400. West Bengal's real slab structure above ₹10,000 is more granular than modeled here — this calculator simplifies it to a flat ₹200/month above the exemption threshold; verify the exact multi-slab table against your current payroll rules for compliance. Always confirm your specific state's current notification before relying on this for payroll or filing purposes.
Frequently asked questions
Why does professional tax vary by state if it sounds like a central government tax?+
Despite the name, professional tax is levied under Article 276 of the Constitution, which specifically empowers state governments — not the central government — to tax professions, trades, callings and employments, subject to an overall annual cap of ₹2,500 per person. That's why each state sets its own slabs, rates and even exemptions, unlike income tax, which is a central levy with one uniform national structure.
Is professional tax the same as income tax?+
No — they're entirely separate. Professional tax is a small, state-level deduction on your salary (capped at ₹2,500/year), while income tax is a much larger central government tax on your total annual income. Professional tax paid is actually deductible from your taxable income under the old income tax regime.
What if my state isn't in this list?+
This calculator covers six major states as a simplified model. If you're employed in a different state — or a union territory — check that state's specific professional tax notification, since slabs, rates and even whether professional tax applies at all vary significantly across India.
