Frequently asked questions
Is this exact?+
No — treat it as a planning estimate. It uses current HMRC Income Tax and National Insurance figures for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, but doesn't include student loan repayments, benefits-in-kind, or Scottish tax bands. For a final figure, check your payslip.
Why does my Personal Allowance disappear as I earn more?+
Between £100,000 and £125,140 of income, the £12,570 Personal Allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 earned above £100,000, reaching £0 at £125,140 — this is what produces the well-known ~60% effective marginal rate in that band.
Should I enter my pension contribution here?+
Only if it's a salary-sacrifice (or 'net pay') pension deducted before tax and National Insurance are calculated. A relief-at-source pension, paid from your take-home pay with tax relief added afterwards, isn't modelled by this field.
Does this apply to Scotland?+
No — Scotland has its own Income Tax bands, set separately from the rest of the UK. National Insurance is unaffected and still applies as shown here, but the Income Tax figure will be wrong for a Scottish taxpayer.
