Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pay advance tax if my employer already deducts TDS on my salary?+

If TDS on your salary alone covers your full tax liability, you generally don't owe additional advance tax. But if you have other income — capital gains, rent, freelance income, interest — that pushes your total liability over ₹10,000 beyond what's already been deducted, advance tax applies to that shortfall.

What happens if I miss an installment or pay less than required?+

You'll typically owe interest under Section 234C for underpaying a specific installment, and under Section 234B if your total advance tax payments for the year fall short of 90% of your final liability. This calculator doesn't compute those interest amounts — they depend on the exact shortfall and timing, which is a more complex, separate calculation.

Are the installment amounts always exactly 15/30/30/25 of the total?+

Yes, by law — the four deadlines require cumulative payments of 15%, 45%, 75% and 100% of your total estimated liability, which works out to that 15/30/30/25 split across the four quarters. Always confirm current deadlines and thresholds against official CBDT guidance, since your estimate of total liability may itself change during the year.
